This is the front cover of my music magazine which I have started on. Here you can see I have got my masthead, the date, barcode and price on my front cover. I still need to put an image on there but i have made good progress. I also have the 3 colours on there which I made a decision on. I may change the colour of the headlines of the stories to yellow as the colour of my image may fit with the three colour scheme.

For my house music magazine, I need a suitable logo which would represent house music magazine well. I looked at some logos on the internet and analyzed them to think of what details they possess and how I want to use some of the features for my actual logo. Research & Planning-Music magazine colour scheme choice

After making a decision on the colours I am going to use, I have now decided to opt against using red. The three colours that I was originally going to use were black, red & white, but I have decided to use yellow instead of red. The reason behind my decision is because some of my audience feedback suggested that I shouldn't use red with a black background. This was a problem because I have always intended to use a black background and even though a lot of the people I interviewed thought that red would be suitable for a house music magazine but I really wanted to have the black background. I then thought what was another colour that the audience felt would be suitable for the genre of my magazine. I found that yellow was a popular choice & I am definitely going to use it as yellow & white writing blends in well with the black background.

Research & Planning-Plan for Location of Photoshoot

The location I am going to use for my photo-shoot is the car park of St Georges church. I think this is a suitable place because it has a kind of rural feel to it with the graffiti and the empty space. This will be taken at night though as then it would fit well with my house music genre. When I was looking through mix-mag, I noticed that the main location for the photos was a wall with graffiti on, so this location is completely relevant for my magazine as it is a wall with graffiti on.

Resarch & Planning-Location choice

For my music magazine I have to have images that are appropriate to put on my music magazine. I have decided to take pictures in a naturally dark environment or just a place but at night time. The location cant really be dull and I would think that a more lively place would be suitable. When I take my photos, the people that willl feature in them will be wearing casually clothing and have a bit of swagger about them.

Research & Planning-magazine interview double page spread

This is an double page spread interview from mix mag. This is a suitable interview for the type of interview I want to inherit as the colours that are featured on this magazine are the three colours which I want to produce on my own music magazine. The three colours are black, white and red, and they clearly stand out here as the black writing stands out well in the white background. The image also represents the genre of my magazine well as the artist wearing casual clothes and is being shown in a dark background. The title is a main feature of this double page spread as again it stands out in the white background and the name of the artist, Joris Voorn, is highlighted in red. The white background is extremely significant because that means that darker colours like black and red really stand out and instantly catches the eyes of  reader and that is why I want to use the three colours that I want to. I may do it differently to this as I may have a black background with white writing as then the reader will be drawn to the background as I feel this will be the key to draw the audience. I'm going to include red when I want something to stand out, for example; key dates, names of artists, and to highlight questions in red and white to make the questions draw the eyes of the reader.

Research & Planning-The Name of my music magazine

When I came to naming my music magazine I originally chose to name it "Flawless." Although it didn't take me long to name my magazine, I wasn't too sure about calling it this so I decided to ask people if they thought that this was a suitable name for my genre. The majority of people said that this probably not a good idea to call it Flawless, as they thought that this was more suitable to a magazine which consisted of bands and not house music artists. I then asked for suggestions on what to call my magazine. One of my class mates said 'Pulse" which I thought was a great name to call my house music magazine. I also thought that this was a symbol for house music as it is of a high tempo and it gets your pulse going. I asked others if they thought that this was a good name for my magazine and they all said that it was a great idea.

Research & Planning-Photoshoot Location

The genre of my music magazine is house. I researched photo shoots of some of the artists that come under this genre. This would give me an idea of what location I am going to take my photos in of my my magazine. I particularly focused on the lighting and the colours used in the images.

These are the photo shoots that i thought were appropriate to upload as they outline the genre of my magazine well. As i said i concentrated on looking at the lighting. I found that the background was dark and that the people in these photo shoots stood out in the dark background. This means that the images are high key lighting. They represent house music very well as the colour black is one of the main colours that represents house music. The two other main colours that represent house music well are red and white and both of these colours are. I also took a strong interest in the clothing. I noticed that the artists clothing were very casual. Judging from these photo shoots, I have a very good idea what type of people I am going to take head shot's of and I know the three colours I am going to use on my double page spread of my music magazine. I think it would be best if i take my head shot's at night, when i get round to take them.

 

Research and Planning-Why I chose to do a House Music

The reason why I chose to do a music magazine on house music (also known as dance) is because:



I like house music a lot, particularly the artists such as Example & Calvin Harris.

I like all music really in general but i thought i would choose house music because it was different to what everybody else was doing.

I think that there is a wide range of colours that could be used on a magazine of this genre. This is vital as it gives me a wide range of options when i am choosing my three colour scheme.

Research and Planning-Plan for the week

 I'm am hoping that this week will be the week where I get my music magazine started. There are other bits and pieces which I need to finish off from previous lessons. This week I aim to fill out the production documents e.g. location recce & risk assessment, and I also need to do a post of head shots of potential models. My main priority this week is to work on extra genre posts and start coming to a conclusion of what I am going to include on my music magazine such as why I came to the decision of calling my magazine "Pulse," and why I have decided to use the three colours that I am going to use.

We used the SLR cameras to take photos as practice for our music magazine. We took photos inside and outside and i have uploaded four. I have uploaded two inside and two outside. These are practice for my music magazine as i will take photos outside with an SLR camera. The photos from these cameras are of better quality as the difference has been proven as my college magazine photos aren't as clear as I took them with a normal camera.

The genre that i will be doing is house music. The artists that i associate with this genre are people like Example, Calvin Harris, Swedish House Mafia and there are many more. The clothing that the people that come under this genre wear are more like party clothing and some outfits are very unique.

This week in AS Media Studies, i am going to carry on with my coursework. This week I am hoping to complete my second draft for my music magazine. The reason for my second draft is because on this I want to include more of the features that the audience would like, for instance the colours that they prefer to be on a house music magazine. I will take a picture of this as soon as I've completed this and i will upload it to my blogger. After i have completed this, I am going to complete my costume/prop list. This is a list that will relate to house music and I need to think about what kind of clothing my audience would wear.

Research and Planning-Questionnaire

This is my questionnaire about music. This was done to collect peoples thoughts on what music magazine they would want to read about the most and what music magazine they would least want to read about. I did my questionnaire on Microsoft word and then i printed out 10 copies to give to 10 people in my class. I asked 8 questions on my questionnaire and after each question, I provided several options below.  I then used my research to create 8 pie charts on Microsoft Power Point. The genre of my music magazine is house music. You can notice this by looking at the contents page as it consists of a black and white theme. You can also distinguish that this is a house music magazine as it has a picture of a man aged in roughly his 20's. This can help me notice the genre of this magazine as the general target audience of this magazine is men aged between 18-30. These are just a couple of features that help me notice that this is a house music magazine but there are also others. The writing on the page is big and bold which stands out immensely to the audience. The writing seems to be a tecno font style which is the main font for a house music magazine. This tends to grab a younger audience and this addition would encourage the reader to read on and read the articles.  The representation of this magazine. The camera angle of the men on this contents page is a medium-close up and you can specially tell that this is a contents page as it has a page number. This contents page also includes stories down the left hand side of the page. This is done to enable the audience to find what they want to read about easier. It also includes other colours like gold/yellow which is used to make the text stand out even more.

Categorizing My Audience

Age-The age of my target audience is young adults like people aged between 18-30 who like to go out and party and have a good time.

Gender-The majority of my audience that I am aiming at attracting is mostly young men as there is mostly male artists that come under the genre of house music. However, I am hoping to attract females at the same age range of 18-30, because they also like to party so i will include a variety of colours.

Occupation-The audience will probably have some form of job or may be in college or university.

Class-I would probably say that the class that magazine will attract is working or middle class.

Wealth-People who are earning at least the minimum wage as they would spend money on gigs.

Interests-People would have interests like house music, partying and possibly drinking if they are interested in this magazine.

Outlook for future-People would need to be receiving some sort of income to spend money on parties and to just simply have a great time.

How am I going to reach them- I would try to reach them by including more masculine colours, and less of pink and purple. Most people that read these magazines are men and the colours mainly consist of a black and white theme.

The genre of this music magazine is house music. You can tell as the colours of a music magazine usually include the colours black and white. The colour pink is also added to this magazine to show a bit of variation and the different rage of colours from brightness to dull colours allows me to imagine that anything could happen while you are listening to house music. To me pink is a symbol of joy and excitement and black and whites shows signs of confusion.

Representation- This magazine front cover shows a people of raving and dances with their hands in thee air jumping up and down and look isolated and are probably oblivious to what is around them. I came to this conclusion because blackness symbols isolation. The people could be isolated from alll their problems in the outside world when they are listening to house music.

Audience- The audience that this magazine targets is mainly at 18-30 year olds. I get this impression because young people are generally the ones that are out there partying and raving and the fact that the magazine is called "Future Music" suggests to me that they are the future. 

Media Language- The shot type that has been used on this magazine front cover is an established shot. This represents the minds of the people that are raving as their minds are completely lost in the distance.

The genre of this magazine is house music. You can tell that this is a a house music magazine because of the colours as a house music magazine generally consists of black and white. This sort of magazine also contains pictures of mostly men just like this one for example. There are many major artists that come under the genre of house music such as, Example, Eric Prydz and David Guetta. The font style is usually a techno type style which is big and bald and immediately catches the eye of the viewer straight away.

Representation- There is a man with his arms up in the air that looks like he is singing at the top of his voice. He looks like he's acting like there is no tomorrow and he doesn't give a care in the world. The man is also lighted up in red which suggests to me there that he is going all out and that there is a fear of danger about to approach him but he just simply doesn't care.

Audience- People aged between about 18-30 who generally like to rave and party. You can tell by the way the guy is raving on the front cover and the fact that the title is called "Future Music" implies that the viewers who would probably be 18-30 year old's are the future.

Media Language- The camera shot that has been used on this front cover is a medium close up. This shot type is where the camera focuses on the head and shoulders. A picture of a DJ mix is present on this front cover. This would be present as there are many major DJ's that come under the genre of house music such as David Guetta and Eric Prydz.

Research and Planning-Evaluation of College Magazine

On my college magazine front cover, I have included a many features of a magazine front cover. I have included a masthead which was in big, blue writing as "YOUR CLARENDON." My college magazine front cover also consists of a slugline which is situated under the masthead telling the audience of the issue and what date the magazine was produced. Stories are also included in my college magazine front cover aswell as the price and the barcode. I also included a medium close up so I have included the basics of a college magazine front cover.
However there are disadvantages to my college magazine front cover as from the audiences point of view, because I have used completely different colours for my front cover and contents page, viewers wouldn't think that they belong to the same magazine. I also think that the picture that I have taken is a bit plain in the background. You could argue if it follows the three colour rule because it consists mainly of the colours green, blue and red but there are other colours included because of the background colour of my image. Another positive that I could add is that to viewers the stories seem interesting and are appropriate. They would interest a different range of people and include the social side of college and and the working side of college. Another negative by looking at my contents page is that it doesnt include a page number so the reader wouldn't know what page it is displayed on.
To sum up, there are a wide range of positives and negatives on my front cover and contents page. For my music magazine, I think that that i need to concentrate a lot on my choice of colours and to choose colours which would go well with each other.
